The cap prevents spilling of water when you try to place the heavy 5-gallon bottles into your water cooler or water dispenser. The cap will work with any bottle (2-gallon, 3-gallon, 5-gallon) that has the indicated neck. The cap is re-usable and should work easily with most water dispensers and water coolers (water coolers with plunge/spike in the middle will NOT work).
